Final Evaluation

Final Evaluation

In conclusion to this unit that we have explored this semester I feel I have learnt a lot of new things regarding film and the high five hand method is imprinted on my brain! I also now notice myself looking at films in a different way and almost breaking everything down and picking away at them to really understand what the directors where trying to capture. I was apprehensive about starting this unit after reading the brief and finding out we would have to create our own fashion film, although it was only 2 minutes it was still quite daunting to do and I wasn’t sure what to expect or what was expected of my work.

Throughout the process of shooting and attending the seminars with Pascal, the whole brief didn’t seem as daunting and I found myself begin to enjoy thinking up ideas for my fashion film and hearing everyone else’s ideas and feedback. Now I have completed this unit and I have my final fashion film edited and put together, I am really proud with how far I have come over the semester and really proud with how my work turned out! I’m also happy that I can say I filmed, edited and made my own 2-minute film. The entire process of filming footage and editing was enjoyable and it was a hard heavy task it was fun to do, although there were times whilst editing that I did have a few meltdowns but that’s all part of the learning process and I got there in the end. The continuity side of this unit was also fun to do as I enjoyed being able to create a design and this time be able to do the makeup application of my own design on my model which I think was a lot more fun because I knew what my strengthens and weaknesses were and I tried to push the boundaries a little further and I’d like to think that I did a good job with the continuity on both weeks and they are a close enough match to each other.

As far as the research and blogging side of this unit goes, I’m glad I planned my fashion film around depression and how people hide behind “a mask” because I got the chance to research into depression more, and also watch films that are based around depression and how directors have approached this delicate subject in different ways, some comedy, some romance. I feel like possibly I could have had a little more research into depression as I feel this could have been slightly more focused on in my blog as this is the underlying narrative to my 2 minute film, but overall I am happy with the quality of my fashion film and how well it turned out once edited and put together.

The use of our IT sessions did really help me with the guidance of how I wanted my film to be edited together and how I had ideally wanted it to turn out, learning about all the different transitions and effects that we could use to put our films together and really make them come to life was very useful and as much as I hated editing at the start towards the end I did begin to enjoy the process of seeing everything start coming together.

Film Directors

Film Directors

I shall be using this post to look briefly at some of the most influential and iconic film directors that have contributed towards creating some of the worlds greatest movies. Starring:

Logan Kerman
Nina Dobrev
Emma Watson

The film is based on 15 year old school student Charlie, he is seen to be an outsider and naive young school boy who is still coming to terms with the death of his best friend who committed suicide and also coping with his first love Sam (Emma Watson), Charlie also has problems of his own and coping with his own mental illness and struggles to find a group of friends where he feels he is fully accepted and included and a part of something that makes him feel he has a purpose.

As Charlie goes through all of these troubles he continues to type letters on his old typewriter to which I assume is to his dead friend as this helps him feel like he is still around and close to him. Charlie appears to be the student that is singled out of any popularity groups and seems to be very alone at school.
Further into the film we see Charlie finally taken in by a group of older students Sam and Patrick who also welcome him to what reality is really like outside of school life.
Charlie is the classical story of how students can be bullied and singled out at high school where all he wants to do is make a few friends and try to enjoy the school life that everybody else has. Charlie and his sister Candace (Nina Dobrev) are the totally opposites on the hierarchy scale in school he is the “loser freshman” with no friends and his sister is a sociable and happy person with many friends at school.

Charlie_profile

Charlie starts to befriend Patrick at the school football game along with his step sister Sam (Emma Watson) who begin to make him feel very welcome and included in something fun and experience what it’s like to have friends and is eventually introduced to the group “the wallflowers” a group of misfits that understand each other .
Patrick and Sam also have problems of there own with Patrick being in love with the college football player who has to keep there relationship a secret so people wouldn’t judge them and Sam who has a reputation of sleeping around with other men after they get her drunk and wasted, but Charlie doesn’t care about any of that he is just happy to have a group of friends that accept him for being himself and all of his flaws.

Logan-ezra-emma-articke

The lighting of the film is so what quite dim and dull throughout the most of the film which sets the mood for the narrative of the film that really everybody is fighting there own battles, even though the lighting is quite low as to create a sense of warmness that probably represents the warmness Charlie feels now he is becoming accepted into a friendship group.
Music selection for the film is all very upbeat and cheery with the use of guitars and drums that help to lighten the mood and help think that there is light at the end of the tunnel for them all.

Now that things are just starting to look up for Charlie and his friends, no sooner do they begin to crumble with Charlie breaking up with Mary-Elizabeth, his girlfriend and Patrick and his football player lover getting caught together everything turns into a mess with Patrick getting violent at school, so Charlie taking it upon himself stands up to the bully’s for Patrick, finally being the one person that stands up to bully’s in general to defend the weaker people.

This story draws on the emotions that people can through when dealing with mental health issues and how standing up for themselves can cause them to take things too far and black out because there emotions and rage are just so heightened that everything they feel goes into there reactions to situations.

Camera angles and movement tend to be a close up shot of the character when events of significance happen such as the fight that Patrick and the bully’s have where Charlie steps into defend Patrick you see the camera zoom in on Charlie’s face and the blank out and then draw back from him to see the reaction that his fellow pupils have. Towards the end of the film you see the senior students ring out of the school to go onto new beginnings the music choice is that of a happy and cheery one to heighten the excitement that everyone holds, whilst Charlie has another year alone at school without his friends.

When the time comes for Charlie’s friends to leave to go to college is all becomes too over whelming for Charlie and his emotions get the better of him we see him fall apart and relive the memories that have happened in his past, the death of his aunt he blames himself for and becomes so overwhelmed with upset and guilt that he thinks everything is his fault and he caused all the paint that him and his family have had to face, the music to this scene is a collective of piano and violin strings that are fairly high pitched to create the impact and tension that we think Charlie will try to take his own life because he cannot deal with the pain anymore it then comes to light that after all of this Charlie appears to be checked into a mental hospital as he is typing out his letters that the root cause of all of Charlie’s pain and distress and anger is caused from past events of his childhood that his was abused by his Aunt Helen.

Troubled by the pressures of his adolescence and the choices he has to make for the future ahead of him, Craig a college student takes it upon himself to check himself into a mental health clinic under the impression he will be able to have a quick fix and be out in no time, Craig learns his is clinically depressed and needs help or guidance to find away to keep his head above water and not let the troubles of whats coming to him push him deeper down.

kind_funny_story_movie_image_keir_gilchrist_01

http://collider.com/its-kind-of-a-funny-story-trailer-keir-gilchrist-zach-galifianakis/

Soon after checking into the mental health clinic Craig soon realises that he will have to stay a minimum of 5 days but as the youth wing unit is closed he will be checked into the adult ward for the duration of his time in the hospital. At the young and naive age that Craig is at he has deluded himself into thinking that his problems will all be solved in a letter on hours and he will be back home into for school to start for the week, as Craig is depressed and considering ending his life there is a lot more to this mental health clinic and the stay that he will be enduring.

The opening scenes to this film of this film is that we see Craig ready to commit suicide in an attempt to jump off a bridge in the city, however, this scene is soon interrupt by the appearance of his family who question his actions and what is the purpose for this kind of extreme behaviour which then concludes in Craig mind as being selfish and makes him feel guilty for considering such an act, we soon then go onto realise that this is in fact a reoccurring dream that Craig has and his sub-conscience is coming into play band trying to fight away the demons that he is battling to help keep his mind clear to what he actions could potentially have.

At the start of this film you do see a difference in Craig and what almost appears to be two sides to his personality, the good side which is trying to battle against his depression and keep him calm and composed and the bad side which is conflicting his thoughts and emotions to push him to the suicidal feelings he has experienced.

The sounds and music throughout the film seem to start put very snappy and loud to create an impact to the audience which relates to the storyline of the mental health issues that Craig faces, for example when Craig first arrives at the mental health clinic he is asked for his keys and shoes laces, with this as Craig’s removes his shoelaces the sound is heightened to create the impact that is needed as this could be a symbolic issues for the attempts to commit suicide and the towards the feelings that have been conflicting Craig’s mind. Also the camera angles and movements almost pan in on significant objects that create impact to the story, with the likes of the sound of shoelaces the camera purposely pans in on the trainer on a close up shot to really push on the point that the laces could be dangerous.

Coincidently there is a girl who is checked into the mental health clinic as to that of a similar age to Craig, the first scenes we see her in are of when Craig is being given a tour around the hospital and the camera movement intentionally sits for a few seconds on Noelle as Craig is walking past to almost signify Craig’s instant interest and intrigue to who this mysterious girl is.

http://cinema.theiapolis.com/movie-2SOX/it-s-kind-of-a-funny-story/gallery/it-s-kind-of-a-funny-story-1041297.html

The lighting that continues throughout this film I would say looks to be very bright, white and pure as this is significant to the location of the film sole being based in a hospital, it is all very medical and clean which could also have a counteract effect of a eery and discomforting place to stay.

Although the clearness and surgical backdrop and brightness isn’t the lighting and colour choice for throughout the entire film we do see  most of the tones to be very bland and plain looking which has been used to again represent the depression and sadness feel to everyone who is staying at the hospital.

Craig does go onto the strike up a friendship with Noelle the mysterious female from earlier on in the film, who is a patient at the hospital because she self harms and inflicts pain onto herself for reasons we never find out in the film.

The lighting does change in a few moment through the film to a warmer and slightly yellower tones when Craig recalls past events and memories whilst in his therapy session with his doctor, which helps you understand at what stage the film flicks back in time too and signify a happier time for Craig.

Silver Linings Playbook (2012)

Starring:

Bradley Cooper

Jennifer Lawrence

Robert De Niro

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1045658/

Pat who is a former college teacher, after having a stint in a mental institution and on his exit from the institution tries to rekindle the marriage with his ex-wife after moving back in with his parents.

The film is a drama and romance based film with elements of comedy, the film does touch on depression and the problems Pat has faced in his past and present. The film also focuses on a female character Tiffany who befriends Pat through there family connections, but it soon becomes clear that she has issues of her own.

Pat has really lost everything of true value to him, his wife and marriage breakdown and also his career as a teacher. On trying to rekindle the marriage with his wife Tiffany offers her help to get a letter to his ex-wife behind the government retraining order that has been placed against him but in doing this Tiffany wants Pat’s help in return.

Bradley Cooper plays the lead role of this film in the character of Pat, he has a tough role in playing and portray such an intricate character of Pat which later comes to light that he has been suffering from undiagnosed bipolar disorder, which must have been a challenging task for Bradley to commit to and ensure he played it sensitively to the issue Pat is facing. The opening scenes of the film start with Pat talking to himself about keeping his head above water and staying calm no matter what he is faced with, he tries to keep a positive attitude towards everything that is wrong in his life. Pat is desperately trying to stay sane and stable to prove to other people and his ex-wife that he is okay and he’s better now. With Pat trying to keep a positive attitude towards his problems he has really deluded himself into thinking that his marriage is that strong that they will move past the problems that occurred in the past and that he is still happily married.

The camera angled and movement that occur in this film start out as quite jumpy and flicks between the characters due to Pat’s unstable and manic behaviour of one moment being calm and collected to then becoming on edge and manic, the angles of the camera seem to focus in on key object and elements of meaning such as the stereo which plays his wedding music or the doctors sign off sheet for his release from the mental institution which all have a significant and symbolic meaning to the story, I think the director has chosen for the camera to angle in this way so that the audience isn’t drawn away from anything else that would appear in the shot. With Pat’s behaviour frequently changing from calm to manic the camera also shows this with the jumpiness as it helps to refer back to the past key moments of what lead up to Pat’s breaking point of recalling past events.

Pat has a mental disorder of bipolar disorder which is the cause for his hot headiness and manic episode which can be triggered by the smallest thing but mean so much more to him and his memories such as the moment he recalls finding his wife having an affair with another teach, the music from their wedding was playing in the background which turns out to be the trigger to Pat’s uncertain and manic behaviour. As I have mentioned before Pat does delude himself into thinking although a lot has happened to him in order of the breakdown of his marriage he wants to take the positives from everything which is where we see the “silver linings” idea come into place which inevitably doesn’t help his recovery and how to cope with dealing with his illness.

Silver-Linings-Playbook-Image-03

SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK Opens In 2 Days, Don’t Miss New TV Spots, Clips, Interviews With Actors & More!

The lighting of the film occurs to be very light and clear with warm tones to help keep the good of the film light and cheerful and compliments the comedic themes into the film to not make it too dark and deep to how the illness can draw someone in so deeply they can barely keep there life together. Pat is clinging onto the idea of of a “silver lining” which doesn’t help with his recovery and trying to deal with his illness and in hopes that this is merely a phase that he will soon shake off and his life will be back to normal and everything will be ok again.

Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence) appears in her opening scenes of a family dinner where she is introduced to Pat, Tiffany has her own problems of how she lost her partner who died and she got fired from her job, her life sounds to be looking quite bleak and down similar to that of Pat’s but in a different. Tiffany’s character seems to be very strong, harsh and blunt at the first scenes where she is introduced to the film and she comes across quite guarded and withdrawn.

Tiffany and Pat hit off quite a bizarre friendship/relationship with each other where they are both very similar but at the same time very different which helps them to understand one another and what they go through.

http://www.gmanetwork.com/news/story/297927/lifestyle/movie-review-love-is-madness-and-vice-versa-in-silver-linings-playbook

In all honesty as much as this is a very serious subject of someone battling there inner demons and a mental illness as serious as bipolar for the films storyline, somehow the director and writers have managed to turn elements of this film into comedy to try and keep it a bit light hearted which helps to lift the mood of the film and such a serious subject. The comedy elements of this film as that it draws on the childish behaviour and immaturity of Pat and Tiffany and how they can loose there tempers so easily but this seems to happen in a comedic way.

The music selections for this film are also very light hearted pieces of music there is nothing too deep, loud or dark to create any tension it all appears to be based around the use of piano keys and clapping to bright a lighter tone to the film.

Fashion Film- Feedback

Fashion Film- Feedback

This week was my final seminar group feedback session with Pascal which is where I have shown my final edited edition of my fashion film.

The response from my class and Pascal was good and gave me some reassurance to what people thought of my film, as I was quite apprehensive as to what others would think, I wasn’t sure myself after the many times of watching my fashion film before showing others wether I even liked it as many times of re watching it I found little things that I was picking fault with so the reassurance was very helpful and needed from my group.

The feedback I was given was great and very helpful in making the last few changes to the film to help make the overall outcome better.

The main comments I had from my group and Pascal were that they thought the music selection was nice and fitted well within my film.

The only other areas that my group made suggestions to where that maybe I could edit the still shot of my characters face when she is at the beach into a different tone of possibly black and white as this could help reference the “back in time” idea I was trying to portray of a happier time and a happier person.

Possibly add in more still shots on this image of her looking happier so the film overall would make more sense in how she got the point in studio of smudging her makeup and looking very sad and upset.

Screen Shot 2015-12-07 at 10.07.57 pm.pngAnd finally the stock footage I have used for the ink in water was that I could cut this down and have it occur again throughout the film when the beats drags out as this would make more sense of the idea that ink dropped into water can be a representation of how two different things can clash but also look quite beautiful, instead of just dropping the footage into the film.

Screen Shot 2015-12-07 at 10.08.57 pm

I have now taken everyones feedback on board and have made the relevant edits to my fashion film which I feel is now finally ready and finished, which I am throughly happy with and really appreciated there comments and feedback as this gave me a lot more confidence in my work and the work I have managed to create.

Technical: French Plaits

Technical: French Plaits

For our final technical session with Lottie we were asked to work on hair styling and areas of hair in which we think are our weaknesses or to try something new out but to take a huge consideration to neatness and to really look at how our hair styles show up on the camera as this would be beneficial to us for our next semester which will be concentrating on how our images show up differently on camera and how that can impact our designs and styles.

I decided that I would practise working on my technical abilities of french plaits as this has always be on of the areas in hair that I tend to struggle with, I wanted to focus on making sure that whilst creating to french plaits I tried to keep them as close to the scalp and make them as tight as possible without causing my model any discomfort, as with french plaits that have to be created very tightly and neatly to ensure they create definition and an impact on screen.

Equipment:

  • Pintail Comb
  • Hairspray
  • Elastic Hair Ties
  • Sectioning Clips.

Step by Step.

  • Firstly I took a pintail comb and sectioned the hair directly down the centre to create a sharp centre parting.
  • Next I clipped one side away to make sure it didn’t get in my way when creating my first french plait.
  • Takin the sectioned side of the hair I then split them into the three smaller section which would be the starting point of creating my french plait.
  • Starting at the very top at the scalp area of the hair I crossed my three sections over into a normal plait then when crossing the smaller section over again I took a small amount of hair from the same side and added this section into the plait, I continued this with crossing over the hair and each time adding a small section into the plait.
  • When I got lower down the back of the scalp I tried to keep my hands as close to the scalp to really ensure the plait stayed fitted closely to the scalp area.
  • Once I had added all the small sections into my plait and there was no more extra hair I then continued into a normal plait down the back of the hair and tied in place with a small elastic hair tie.
  • I then took the other side of the hair out of the sectioning clip and repeated this process again to the other side of the hair, consciously making sure that each section was even to the other side and making sure each section crossed over equally to the other side of the hair.

These image are how the outcome of my french plaits had turned out, I am glad we were given this opportunity to practise on hairstyle we were very confident in as I think with practise my hair techniques are gradually improving.

As you can see by my model’s hair that her hair is layered in style, which therefore I do have a few fly away bits of hair coming out from the plaits but this can be resolved by using a small comb and hairspray and gently tease the hair back into the plaits and hold with hairspray.

Starring:

Julianne Moore

Nicholas Hoult

George, a college professor who’s partner was killed in a car accident. George who is riddled with grief from the tragedy of loosing his lover decides that he wants to commit suicide. The film solely shows how depression and grief can affect a person and really push them to point of questioning their purpose and wether their live is worth living without their true loves. This is what happens with George as he goes on with his daily life and routine, people would never think of the tragedy he has experienced and how he is questioning aspects of his life and is it truly worth moving forward without his partner.

The director of the film Tom Ford, who up until now I only assumed was a fashion designer and solely related to the fashion industry, I had no idea that he wanted to buy the rights to a novel and create it into a movie which resulted in him doing this with A Single Man. Now knowing this information and the director behind this film is Tom Ford I have now began to see the film in a different way, as not only does it have representation to depression and grief and the ways people can deal with this situation, but it also has made me look into more detail of the styling and fashion of this film. As the film is set in the 1960’s the film shows a sharp and mart styling selections for the characters which is a great point to make for the mis en scene side to the film. George who you see for the most part of the film is dressed in very smart clothing and sharp suits, looking very well groomed considering the tragedy he is experiencing in his life at that moment, the slick back to his hair styling and glasses represent the idea of his intelligence as a college professor.

The character selection for this film was great choice for Tom Ford, his choice for Colin Fifth as the main character to portray a very intricate character with such sensitive subject for his character of George with along with the acting skills of portraying a well spoken and well mannered gentlemen. The intricate aspects of the character of George would be that one moment there is the scene where George wants to take his own life by shooting himself with a pistol to then realise he can’t bring himself to do it, then shots to the next scene of him meeting up with a friend Charley, played by Julianne Moore and begins dancing around to 60’s jazz music. With this being said George is a very secretive and hidden character that one moment he is ready to take his life and the next he is dancing around with a friend who would never think that hours earlier he was ready to take his own life which proves he is a very distressed and complicated character which must have been a very tough job for Colin Fifth to portray.

The lighting of this particular film is that is starts out very plain, dark and grey to suggest and give indication to the moods of the storyline and how it will play out with the reference to depression and sadness. As the film moves on throughout the story and the direction its almost as if the lighting of the scenes begin to lighten which I can only interpret as his feelings are becoming slightly lighter and he is possibly coming to terms with what has happened to him and he is beginning to accept his fate and move on with his life, although he realises the pain will always be there for his loss but his life will still go on and he will find a way to carry that pain.

The scene shots and angles that have been used for camera appear to be very close and very wide equally, the closeness of the camera suggest to me that they have been used to really understand and collect the impact that this tragedy has had of George and you see deeply into the expression of his face and how you can tell as the audience the true pain of what he is carrying with him alone.

With reference to the mis en scene of this film I have spoken about the styling and how it pays true relevance to Tom Ford and his fashion collections of being very smart, sleek and sharp but also looking at the makeup designs that have been used on Julianne’s character of Charley it is very editorial high fashion but very 1960’s expression, particularly with the scene of Charley and George dancing in her house, her eye makeup is very edgy with the sharp lines on eyeliner used to create the shapes on her eyes, her hairstyling is that of a very 1960’s fashionista with the classical backcombed beehive but has been modernised into a beehive of curls.

My Fashion Film- Final

I have now uploaded my fashion film to youtube which I will be showing to my group in tomorrow seminar with Pascal and getting my final feedback on any last edits I should or could consider making before the submission deadline.

I have also decided on the title name of my film which will be called “Vizard” which means-  ‘a mask, one for disguise or protection’

I think this is a very fitting title name for my film as it refers to the idea of a mask but also depression as a mask is used to disguise which could be to guise her feelings and protect herself.

Now that I have shot all my footage for my fashion film, looking back at my storyboard my film has taken on only a few of the ideas I originally had for my storyboard because whilst shooting my footage and editing them together I felt that going on to shot footage in my characters bedroom and using too many visual representations this could have made my fashion film to literal in the sense that if I did add all the extra footage into the film it would be to in sequence and perhaps be quite boring and obvious.

I am happy with all the documented footage I have and that I have added into my fashion film as its touches on the idea of depression but holds back from the story than becoming to literal and could have potentially ruined the work I have put together to create.

Whilst in the editing process of my film I have used some stock footage from http://www.Videezy.com which you will see flash up in parts of my film.
