Film Directors
I shall be using this post to look briefly at some of the most influential and iconic film directors that have contributed towards creating some of the worlds greatest movies. I will be looking at them in comparisons to each other and how they are each all very different but still have the same agenda to create great movies.
Steven Spielberg

Starting off with Steven Spielberg who is probably one of the worlds most iconic and well known film directors. Looking back through his master pieces of work and the volume of films he has directed you can understand why his work become to be on of the most influential of the filming world. With the likes of E.T The Extra Terrestrial which is a classic great movies. Not only is Steven Spielberg a film director but also a producer and film writer.

Steven Spielberg’s filmography really set him on the map as one of the greatest film directors with his film Jaws (1975) a film based on a huge shark attack on a small island, which then went on to trigger a tradition for annual summer blockbusters to be released. Another film which Steven Spielberg is greatly accredited for is his direction of Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) starring the lead role of Harrison Ford as an archaeologists searching for the Ark of Covenant before the Nazi’s do, this then went onto Spielberg directing the follow up film of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984).

A big success film for Steven Spielberg was his work on Jurassic Park (1993) which saw this film sit as one of the most grossing movies of all time and resulted in winning 3 Oscar’s. Spielberg then went on to direct Shindlers List (1993), which is a film about the Holocaust. Which won him 3 Oscar’s and also Best Picture.

Since then Spielberg has gone onto to direct and produce many other successful box office grossing films and also helped to set up the production company DreamWorks.
Michael Bay

Michael Bay is an american film director who is known for his directing work on huge budget films which are mostly seen as action genres with a lot of high paced intensity, many of Bay’s work has gone onto be a huge success! Michael Bay has a large collective o successful films he has directed such as his work for Pearl Harbour (2001) which is a war film based on the Blitz, and the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour.
Even though Pearl Harbour received quite a few negative reviews it still went not to be a huge success in the cinemas and earn’t almost $450 million globally. Pearl Harbour was also nominated for four Academy Awards which won Best Sound Editing.
Michael Bay also directed the film series of Transformers which are films based on the toy cars created by Hasbro and how thy join together with the military to help save planet earth from evil and the enemy side of the Decepticons. Transformers was the first film to be released from the series in 2007 and recieved mostly positive reviews from the audience and grossed at a huge $709 million worldwide and also went onto win four awards at the Visual Effect Society. The third film from the series Transformers: Dark of the Mood released in 2011 is the highest successful gross film of the series to date and sits in the tenth-highest grossing films of all time by making a huge $1.12 billion.

Martin Scorsese

American director, producer, screenwriter and actor Martin Scorsese with over 45 years in the film industry. Scorsese is another film director hugely responsible for some huge box office hits in the cinema. His work on the crime film Goodfellas (1990) which is based on the story of mobs and gangsters, a young boy who is growing up who grows up into this lifestyle and works himself hard to work trough the ladder to the top.

A more recent film that Scorsese was hugely successful with was the comedy crime film The Wolf of Wall Street (2014), the film is based on the memoir of Jordan Belfort which was later adapted into a film by Scorsese. The story of the film is of a stockbroker who is guilty of crimes and manipulation of the stock market and defrauding investors out of millions in his road to success but unbeknown to him the fortune he is blowing on sex, drugs, alcohol and the finer things in life the FBI are homing in on his schemes.

Tim Burton

Tim Burton, another american film directer, however, Burtons focus is more on the gothic and quirky horror and fantasy films.
Time Burton directed the horror comedy of Beetlejuice (1988) which is based around a deceased you couple who bemuse ghost in their old home alone with this there is Beetlejuice who is an obnoxious and arrogant ghost that is hell bent on scaring away the new residents of the house, When Beetlejuice was released it grossed at $73.3 million off of a budget of $15 million.
The biggest success film for Burton to date is for his work on the film adaptation of Alice in Wonderland (2010) which is a fantasy film based on a young girl Alice who falls down a rabbit hole and thrown into a whole different realm of crazy, fantasy and weird place Wonderland. After the reals of this film it saw a huge success in the cinemas when it grossed at just over $1 billion worldwide.

James Cameron

Canadian film director, inventor, engineer and deep sea explorer who has two notable huge success films on his filmography that being Titanic which is a film based on the story of the cruise liner sinking in the Atlantic Ocean and follows the story of the romance that blossoms between a young couple who are from very different backgrounds and wealth. The film was budgeted at $200 million which made it the most expensive film ever made at that time, when it was finally released it grossed at $600.8 million in the Us alone and more than $1 billion globally. Titanic then went onto become the highest grossing film of all time, it stayed at the top of this chart from 1999 up until Cameron went on to release another hugely global success film Avatar (2009) therefore leaving Titanic at the tip for just over 11 years!

Avatar is a sci-fi fantasy film which was directed, produced and written all by Cameron himself. The film is based on another planet Pandora, where the environment is highly poisonous the humans, however, the Na’vi that lives there which are human formed hybrids called Avatars can be link to the human mind to allow them to move and explore.

Avatar was a film budgeted to $237 million when the film went on to be released it received highly positive reviews with praise to the visual effects. Avatar also broke many box office records and took over the spot of the highest grossing film of all time. Th film eventually grossed at over $2 billion worldwide which was the first ever film to have such a monumental success.

Lastly we have English film directer, producer and often nicknames “The Master of Suspense” Alfred Hitchcock pioneered many elements of the suspense thriller and what it is today.
Hitchcock became very successful in the British cinema and became renowned as England best director. The best known film from Hitchcock would be for his work on on Psycho, the film was budgeted to $800,000 and was shot in the black and white footage, the hugely successful shower scene with the death of a young women become the defining moment for the new horror genre.
